Spatial Memory Practices in Berlin:
Monuments, Voids, and Voices

Seminar and audio series at Humboldt-Universität and Cashmere Radio
Berlin, DE (2024)
with Kandis Friesen

Facilitating a research-led seminar investigating the contested practices of memory-making and the institutionalization of history in Berlin. Engaging with architecture, activism, and public remembrance, the course used a cross-disciplinary approach to analyze how the city's transformations since 1989 reveal dynamic tensions between the built environment and the social significance of space. The curriculum focused specifically on green areas of the city as contested sites of remembrance, where "voids" and absent presences are particularly visible.

The methodology combined theoretical analysis with immersive site visits led by guest experts: exploring the layered histories of Tiergarten through Miriam Schickler’s “Geteilte Welten” (Shared Worlds) and investigating the colonial and political dimensions of Treptower Park alongside Vincent Bababoutilou’s “zurückerzählt” (Reold). These pedagogical encounters provided the framework for students to conduct their own mixed-method research, culminating in a collaboration with Cashmere Radio.

The final outcome was a 10-episode audio series where students translated their research into original audiowalks at Volkspark Friedrichshain, turning footsteps, voices, and fragments of memory into a collective sonic archive that offers a "counter-monumental" toolkit for navigating the contemporary metropolis.

In collaboration with Cashmere Radio and the “Teaching and Learning with Society” program of the Office for Public Engagement and Knowledge Exchange with Society, Zentrum für Kulturtechnik.
